The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is now showcasing “Apex,” one of the most complete Stegosaurus fossils ever discovered, after purchasing it for $44.6 million at auction in July 2024. The 11.5-foot-tall and 27-foot-long skeleton, unearthed near Dinosaur, Colorado, holds about 80% of its bones, providing a unique opportunity for scientists to study the dinosaur’s growth and metabolism.
As part of the display, researchers will analyze the thigh bone sample and conduct CT scans on the skull structure. The goals of this study include identifying which species of Stegosaurus “Apex” belongs to and investigating the metabolism and growth patterns of these dinosaurs.
The exhibit is loaned by billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin, who bought the skeleton at auction. Apex surpassed the previous record holder, a T. rex named “Stan,” which sold for $31.8 million in 2020. Unlike Stan, however, this dinosaur will remain publicly available for research and display.
