Stellantis Revives V-8 Hemi Engine for Ram 1500 Pickup Trucks

Stellantis is bringing back its iconic V-8 Hemi engine for the Ram 1500 full-size pickup trucks starting this summer. The company had discontinued the 5.7-liter version of the engine due to fuel economy regulations and a shift towards electric vehicles.

The decision to revive the Hemi engine was made by Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who admitted that canceling it was a mistake. “Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you,” Kuniskis said. The new engine will feature a unique badge called the “Symbol of Protest,” which replaces the traditional “HEMI” logo.

The Hemi engine produces 395 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque and will be available as a $1,200 option on most models. Ram has struggled with sales in recent years due to price increases, production issues, and the discontinuation of the Hemi engine.

Kuniskis expects the Hemi engine to represent 25% to 40% of the Ram 1500 pickup truck’s sales. The company will continue to offer more efficient engines, including a twin-turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine called the Hurricane. A high-output version of the Hurricane engine is also available.

The revival of the Hemi engine is part of Kuniskis’ new product turnaround plan, which includes 25 product announcements over an 18-month period. The move aims to regain customers who may have been deterred by Ram’s efforts to push more efficient engines and electric vehicles.
