Amazon is developing a software for humanoid robots that can ‘spring out’ of its delivery vans, aiming to improve package delivery efficiency. The company is testing the two-legged bots at a “humanoid park” in San Francisco, where they will be trained to work as Amazon delivery workers.
The robots are designed to replace human drivers in 20,000 electric Rivian vans, which Amazon plans to have on the road by 2030, with a goal of 100,000 units. However, humans will still work alongside the robots as drivers, ensuring seamless operations.
Amazon’s robot-friendly fleet is expected to reduce order fulfillment times by up to 25%, according to company data. The company has already tested humanoid robots at its warehouses and plans to expand their use to delivery services.
While the technology shows promise, experts caution that complex environments and variable conditions will pose challenges for the robots. As Amazon continues to develop its robot-friendly fleet, it aims to improve package delivery efficiency while maintaining human employment.
