George Wendt’s Cause of Death Revealed as Cardiac Arrest

George Wendt, best known for playing Norm Peterson on the popular sitcom Cheers, died from cardiac arrest with other underlying causes. A death certificate obtained by PEOPLE revealed that Wendt had congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and hypertension contributing to his death. Additionally, he suffered from end-stage renal disease (kidney failure) and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Wendt was 76 when he passed away on May 20, at home.

His publicist, Melissa Nathan, confirmed the news in a statement shared with PEOPLE. Wendt’s family expressed their condolences, saying he died peacefully in his sleep while at home. The family has requested privacy during this time.

Wendt’s former costars, including Ted Danson and John Ratzenberger, reflected on their favorite memories of him. Danson described Wendt as a “beloved actor and comedian” who will be missed forever. Ratzenberger recalled sharing the stage with Wendt for 11 years and praised his comedic timing and loyalty to those he loved.
