The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 finally launched globally on Thursday, with fans camping out and waiting in line for days to get their hands on the console. The new device boasts a larger screen, enhanced social features, detachable controllers that can function like computer mice, and improved gaming capabilities.
While some gamers were initially put off by the console’s hefty price tag of $449, many die-hard fans are willing to pay the premium to experience the latest innovation. Influencer Jacey Adler described the new design as “cool” and praised its social features, which allow for seamless multiplayer experiences.
However, not all reactions were positive. Some attendees found the detachable controllers sensitive, while others struggled with game performance. The real star of the show was Mario Kart World, a new installment in the beloved racing series that presented a vast open world to explore alongside traditional Grand Prix competitions.
Nintendo’s CEO Nate Bihldorff emphasized the console’s improved processing power and graphical capabilities, promising an order of magnitude more gameplay opportunities than its predecessor. But with a hefty price tag and uncertain sales projections, it remains to be seen whether the Switch 2 will meet Nintendo’s lofty ambitions. The company aims to sell 15 million units by March 2026, but some analysts believe that may not come close to the original Switch’s record-breaking 150 million sales.
