Jason Kidd in Running for Knicks Head Coaching Job

The New York Knicks are considering a Hall of Fame name with organizational ties as part of their coaching search. According to reports, they will formally ask for permission to speak with Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd about the team’s vacant head coaching position.

Kidd played for the Knicks from 2012-13 and led the Mavs to the NBA Finals last year. He has a strong relationship with former Knick Jalen Brunson, who is now with the Knicks. The Mavs will likely require compensation if they were to hire Kidd, as this has happened in previous coaching hires.

Kidd’s coaching career includes stints with the Nets and Bucks, where he was compensated for his services. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Mavs last year through 2026-27. Although he had interest from the Knicks before Tom Thibodeau’s firing, Kidd is now reportedly the top candidate.

Other coaches in consideration include former associate coach Johnnie Bryant and Minnesota’s Chris Finch, but the Rockets have rebuffed the Knicks’ attempts to interview Ime Udoka. The team must navigate negotiations with potential candidates while also meeting any required compensation to the Mavs.
