New Bears head coach Ben Johnson is introducing an element of unpredictability to the team’s offense, including trick plays that involve offensive linemen catching passes from quarterbacks. In the first mandatory minicamp, Johnson had players catch passes, and he believes some linemen have the potential to be involved in these plays.
According to Johnson, the linemen will only participate once a year, during training camp and in the regular season, to assess their ability to catch or throw the ball. Some linemen stood out in this evaluation, including right tackle Darnell Wright.
While it’s unclear if the Bears will use these trick plays frequently, it will force opposing defenses to be prepared for unexpected plays, which could give Johnson an edge in building a winning offense.
