Asteroid Danger: Two Threats Loom Over Earth

Two asteroids pose a threat to our planet. One, 2024 YR4, has a less than 3% chance of colliding with Earth in the next seven years. However, another much larger asteroid, Bennu, is estimated to hit us between 2175 and 2199, giving it a 1 in 3000 probability.

Bennu, discovered in 1999, is approximately 500 meters in diameter, making it significantly larger than 2024 YR4. Its impact would cause devastating consequences, including food insecurity, health insecurity, and falling temperatures. In the worst-case scenario, up to 400 million tons of dust would be propelled into the stratosphere, leading to a global temperature drop of 4°C.

While Bennu’s collision is unlikely, its scientific significance cannot be ignored. As an “intact remnant of the formation of the Solar System,” it holds answers about the origin of life on Earth. In 2018, the OSIRIS-Rex space probe collected samples from Bennu, which revealed traces of salty water and complex organic compounds.

Despite these risks, asteroid monitoring continues to advance our understanding of these celestial threats. As scientists closely monitor both asteroids, we must remain vigilant about the potential dangers they pose to our planet.
