Live Video Awaits Moment of Underwater Volcano Eruption Off West Coast

A live video stream is awaiting a possible underwater volcanic eruption off the coast of Oregon, USA. The Axial Seamount, located about 3,500 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, has been creeping towards an eruption since December 2024, its first in eight years.

Scientists say this volcano doesn’t pose a threat to the public due to its depth and distance from shore. However, cameras have been installed to capture live footage of the event, which can be viewed online at any time.

The Ocean Observatories Initiative has set up a camera to monitor the Axial Seamount’s activity, providing a unique opportunity for viewers to witness an underwater volcanic eruption in real-time. The live stream is available 24/7 and can also be recorded non-stop on specific days.

According to Bill Chadwick, research professor with Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, the volcano’s frequent eruptions are due to its location on a plate boundary and over a hotspot, similar to Hawaii or Iceland. The eruption, if it happens, will not pose any harm to people, but it will be an exciting and rare event for scientists and viewers alike.
