Rory McIlroy Misses Cut After Hitting Quadruple-Bogey

Rory McIlroy’s disappointing performance in the RBC Canadian Open saw him card an 8-over 78, barely avoiding a cut with four players posting worse scores through 36 holes. The Northern Irish golfer struggled on his fifth hole, where he scored quadruple-bogey after hitting a long approach shot that sailed past spectators.

McIlroy’s woes continued throughout the round, as he added four bogeys and a double to his scorecard. Despite playing some of the best golf in 2023, including a playoff victory, McIlroy was outside the top 125 in every notable strokes-gained category on Friday.

The 151st-ranked player expressed concern about his driver, which did not perform as expected after being replaced this week. McIlroy is heading to the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club next week and believes that hitting fairways will be crucial to his success.

With only four players posting worse scores through 36 holes, Cameron Champ leads the way at 12 under, with Andrew Putnam two shots back. Nick Taylor and Richard Lee are also in contention at 9 under. This was McIlroy’s debut at TPC Toronto, but he has twice won this tournament at different venues.
