Israel Strikes Beirut’s Southern Suburbs Amid Eid Al-Adha Celebration

Israel carried out air strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Thursday night, targeting Hezbollah’s drone production facility. The attack occurred despite a ceasefire being in effect between Israel and the armed group for six months.

Hezbollah’s “extensive use” of drones is what led to the military’s decision. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the strikes, calling them a “systematic and deliberate attack on our homeland.” Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun described the strikes as a “flagrant violation of an international accord.”

The strikes caused thousands to flee packed streets in the densely populated area, generating renewed panic and fear on the eve of Eid Al-Adha. The Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon wrote that the attack occurred “on the eve of a sacred religious festival.”
