A highly pathogenic avian influenza, H5N1, has been detected in a commercial layer chicken flock in Sioux County, Iowa. This is the state’s first confirmed case since June and the fourth overall this year.
H5N1 affects both wild and domestic bird populations, but often proves fatal to domestic birds like chickens and turkeys. The virus can spread through wild birds without causing noticeable symptoms, putting domestic flocks at risk.
In 2024, H5N1 also affected Iowa dairy herds, resulting in mortality rates of less than 1%. Dairy farmers who received supportive care were able to recover with minimal losses.
According to State Ag Secretary Mike Naig, the key to protecting flocks and herds lies in strengthening biosecurity practices and protocols.
