1.7 Million Air Conditioners Recalled for Mold Exposure Risk

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a massive recall of approximately 1.7 million air conditioners due to the risk of mold exposure. The recalled units, sold under various brand names including Midea, Frigidaire, and Mr. Cool, were made in China and Thailand.

According to the CPSC, water pooling in Midea’s U and U+ window air conditioners can lead to slow draining, resulting in mold growth. This can cause respiratory issues such as coughing, stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing, or itchy eyes, as well as skin problems like rashes.

Midea has received over 150 reports of mold in affected air conditioners, including cases where people experienced respiratory symptoms and allergic reactions. The recalled units were sold nationwide at major retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, and online at Amazon.com.

Consumers with recalled air conditioners are advised to participate in the recall immediately and contact Midea for a free repair or a full refund based on purchase date or manufacture date. Those who wish to continue using their air conditioner while waiting for a repair can find instructions on how to inspect the unit before continuing use on Midea’s website.

The recalled units are white, 22 inches wide, and 14 inches high, with remote controls that can be controlled via mobile apps. A full list of affected models can be found on the CPSC notice and Midea recall website.
