Pope Leo XIV met with newly sworn-in Argentine President Javier Gerardo Milei at the Vatican on Saturday morning. According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the meeting was “cordial” and focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Holy See and Argentina.
The discussions also touched on socio-economic progress, poverty reduction, and social cohesion. Regional and international socio-political issues were also discussed, with an emphasis on promoting peace in ongoing conflicts.
President Milei’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had previously met with him on several occasions, including a meeting to discuss the canonization of Argentine saint Maria Antonia de San Jose y Figueroa, known as “Mama Antula”.
The 54-year-old president attended Pope Francis’ funeral and Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration Mass.
