Pope Leo XIV Meets Argentine President Milei Amid Controversy

Argentina’s President Javier Milei met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Saturday, sparking hopes for improved relations. The Pope welcomed Milei to the Vatican, describing their talks as “cordial.”

The two discussed issues of common interest, including socioeconomic progress, poverty reduction, and social cohesion. However, Milei’s radical free-market approach has drawn criticism from Catholics, who argue that it contradicts traditional teachings.

Milei’s office announced that the Pope has confirmed he will visit Argentina next year, potentially as part of a South American tour. This could be a significant shift in relations between the Vatican and Argentina.

A tense relationship exists between Milei and Pope Francis, an Argentine who previously held the papacy. Milei had criticized Francis for his handling of social issues, calling him “an imbecile” and equating him with the Antichrist.

Milei’s policies have been met with criticism from Archbishop Jorge Ignacio Garcia Cuerva, who accused him of lacking empathy and understanding for ordinary Argentines. The Pope’s meeting with Milei follows a recent agreement between Italy and Argentina on energy cooperation.
