Hamas in Crisis as Israel’s Siege Tightens Grip

Hamas is struggling to cope with the devastating effects of a severe Israeli siege, which has been tightened in recent months. The group, once considered a formidable force, now resembles more like a guerrilla movement, with small units of gunmen operating in the rubble with light weapons and explosives.

The war continues to grind on as Israel expands its “seize-hold-and-demolish” strategy, resulting in tragic effects for civilians. Hamas still holds dozens of hostages, 20 of whom are thought to be alive, but the group has rejected an Israeli proposal that would have freed some of them during a 60-day ceasefire.

Analysts say Ismail Haddad’s hardline stance is evident in this rejection, and his decision-making may soon face a critical test. The veteran terrorist leader must decide whether to pursue a ceasefire or risk losing ground and people to the IDF’s advance.

The situation on the ground is becoming increasingly dire, with intense fighting reported in Gaza City and its suburbs. The civilian population is struggling to cope with hunger, which has become a more potent force than fear, as aid has been cut off for nearly three months.

Hamas was tasked with rebuilding its infrastructure during the last ceasefire, but Israel claims this is now harder due to the cutoff of traditional NGO-led aid systems. However, social media suggests that Hamas is still using propaganda to control the population, including videos of “field executions” and warnings against looting.

As protests in Gaza have shown, ordinary Gazans’ fear of Hamas may be waning, but the situation remains volatile, with at least one ringleader murdered in recent weeks.
