Israeli forces have opened fire on people waiting for food supplies near a distribution point in Rafah, killing at least four Palestinians and injuring dozens more. The incident occurred just days after the new system of providing aid to Gaza was introduced, which has been criticized as chaotic and dangerous.
Eyewitnesses say Israeli troops fired warning shots, claiming they were targeting individuals who approached their forces. However, witnesses disputed this account, saying that many people were innocent bystanders trying to receive desperately needed food.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-US backed group, had announced the opening of its distribution points, but witnesses claim that the site was closed when it opened, and then suddenly opened again, leading to a chaotic situation.
A 42-year-old man died at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis after being injured near another GHF distribution point, where 29 people were also hurt. The Israeli military claimed that they had fired warning shots, but witnesses disputed this account.
This incident brings the total number of Palestinian deaths while trying to access food in Gaza since May to 110, with over 1,000 injured.
