Prostate Cancer Awareness: Understanding Risk Factors and Early Detection

This Men’s Health Month, it’s essential to know that approximately 313,780 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and around 35,770 men are expected to die from the disease, according to American Cancer Society. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men (excluding skin cancer) and the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men.

Dr. Viet Q. Tran, chief of service, Urology Department, Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center, emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment. “About 13 out of every 100 American men will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, with about 2 to 3 men dying from it.” The most common risk factor is age, but with proper treatment and early detection, most men can survive prostate cancer.

A recent trend shows prostate cancer being diagnosed in younger men, with 10% of new cases now occurring before age 55. Researchers are investigating the causes behind this trend, including genetics, lifestyle factors, and environmental exposures. Younger men diagnosed with prostate cancer often present with more aggressive forms of the disease, affecting survival rates.

Early detection is key to recovery and survival. An annual PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test can detect prostate cancer in its early stages when it’s most treatable. Dr. Tran recommends that men with a family history of prostate cancer or Black men undergo screening once per year starting at age 40. Men without a family history but who are over 55 should also consider regular PSA testing.

Symptoms of prostate cancer, such as back pain, swelling of the legs, weight loss, and difficulty urinating, often appear in later stages of the disease. Therefore, it’s crucial to have a PSA blood test to detect prostate cancer early. Kaiser Permanente offers valuable information related to prostate cancer and screening, helping men take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing this disease.
