US Sees Surge in Measles Cases Amid Summer Travel Season

The US has reported 80 new measles cases, its largest weekly increase since late April, bringing the total to 1,168 cases for the year so far. Most of these new cases are linked to travel and outbreaks, rather than a large outbreak centered in West Texas.

A health warning from the UK’s Health Security Agency suggests that summer travel could trigger another measles surge in England. Globally, rising cases over the past year and ongoing outbreaks have raised concerns.

The CDC reports 34 states with cases, including South Dakota’s first reported case. Outbreaks account for 95% of this year’s cases, with children under 5 making up 29%, followed by adults (33%) and children aged 5-19 (38%).

New measles cases have been reported in Virginia and Georgia, linked to exposure to family members who acquired the infection abroad. In Canada, a measles death was reported, attributed to a premature infant born to an unvaccinated mother.

The US is on pace to reach its highest annual number of measles cases since achieving elimination status in 2000.
