US Debt Crisis Looms Unless Economy Grows 3% Annually

The world’s largest asset manager has warned the US will drown in debt unless it finds a way to stimulate and grow its economy. Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, spoke at the 2025 Forbes Iconoclast Summit, citing the rapid growth of the national debt from $8 trillion in 2000 to over $36 trillion today.

A pending tax bill is expected to add $2.3-2.4 trillion to the debt. If real economic growth doesn’t exceed 3% a year, Fink says the US will hit a wall. However, he believes the country can still climb out of its multi-trillion-dollar hole by taking steps such as unlocking private capital, streamlining permitting, and rebuilding infrastructure.

Fink highlights the importance of focusing on key industries like AI, where the US is facing a shortage of 500,000 electricians. Despite his pessimistic views, Fink believes that with the right policies in place, the foundation for growth is there, but it needs to be unlocked.
