Drinking Coffee May Help Women Stay Healthy as They Age

A new study from Harvard University suggests that drinking coffee every morning can help women stay mentally sharp and physically strong later in life. Researchers followed a group of nearly 50,000 women for 30 years and found that those who drank caffeinated coffee experienced a 2-5% greater chance of healthy aging compared to non-coffee drinkers.

The study also found that moderate coffee intake (2-4 cups per day) was linked to improved physical and mental function in middle-aged women. In contrast, decaf coffee and tea did not have the same effect.

Lead researcher Sara Mahdavi noted that the health benefits of coffee appeared specific to the beverage itself, rather than caffeine more broadly. The team is now planning to explore how coffee’s bioactive compounds may influence molecular aging pathways.

While the study’s findings are promising, Mahdavi emphasized that nutrition and lifestyle habits remain the most powerful contributors to healthy aging. She also warned that not everyone may benefit from coffee consumption, particularly those sensitive to caffeine.
