Measles Outbreaks Spread Across Canada, Mexico and US, Linked to Low Vaccination Rates

Measles cases are on the rise in neighboring countries Canada and Mexico, with significant outbreaks reported in both nations. The recent surge in measles cases has led to at least one death in each country.

In Ontario, Canada, an infant born prematurely with a measles infection died due to complications from the virus and other medical issues unrelated to the virus. Similarly, four people have died from measles in Mexico this year, and three individuals have passed away in the US – all of whom were unvaccinated.

The World Health Organization has warned that the risk of measles is high in the Americas Region due to low vaccination rates. Canada, which previously reported no continuous spread of the virus for over 27 years, has seen a significant increase in cases this year.

At least 2,755 measles cases have been reported in Canada so far, with most coming from Ontario residents. The US has also reported at least 1,168 cases, primarily linked to an outbreak centered in West Texas.

Experts attribute the outbreaks to low vaccination rates among Mennonite communities in the affected areas. However, no direct link between the outbreaks in Mexico and Canada has been established.
