Mean Girls Creator Seeks Back Pay from Paramount Studios

Lindsay Lohan may not be the only one who thinks Paramount is getting a little too cozy with its Mean Girls merch, but this time it’s Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees And Wannabes, who’s taking issue with the studio.

According to Wiseman, she sold the rights to her book in 2002 for $400,000, but a provision allowing residual payments from the film’s box office success was overlooked. Wiseman claims that Paramount never gave her a share of the profits despite the movie becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Wiseman asserts that having her name used in the Playbill for the Broadway adaptation and being cited as an inspiration by Tina Fey were insufficient compensation, citing “unpaid dues” for her work on the film. The author’s case has sparked calls for greater equity among creators.
