US Lawmakers Reject Trump’s NASA Budget Cuts

US lawmakers have fired back against President Donald Trump’s proposed budget cuts for NASA, rejecting plans that would slash funding for science projects and keep big rocket programs afloat. The proposal, which was met with criticism from the scientific community, aims to cancel programs like the Gateway space station, terminate the Space Launch System (SLS) Moon rocket, and cut almost half of the US space agency’s science budget.

However, the US Senate has responded by releasing a Budget Reconciliation Text that gives lawmakers a chance to approve or modify Trump’s request. The document reveals that lawmakers are prioritizing big rocket programs over science funding, with around $10 billion set aside for the SLS until September 2032.

Funding for commercial outfits working on the SLS will receive significant attention, with $4.1 billion allocated for Artemis IV and V missions. In contrast, there is little evidence of restored funding for canceled science projects. Instead, lawmakers have opted to maintain funding for the International Space Station (ISS) and allocate an additional $1.25 billion.

The rejection of Trump’s budget cuts highlights a stark divide between lawmakers’ priorities, with big rockets taking precedence over scientific research. The move suggests that scientists may face significant challenges in resisting future funding cuts under the new administration.
