Asteroid YR4: Moon Impact Odds Rise to 4.3%

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has provided new data on asteroid 2024 YR4, which has led to an increase in the odds of it impacting the moon in 2032. The chances now stand at 4.3%, according to NASA.

The asteroid was discovered in late 2024 and initially raised concerns due to its high risk of impact with Earth. However, further observations have reduced this risk to zero, leaving the moon as the new target for concern.

Webb’s latest data improved scientists’ understanding of YR4’s orbit, allowing them to refine their predictions for the asteroid’s path in 2032. If an impact were to occur, NASA assures that it would not alter the moon’s orbit around Earth.

The world’s space agencies are preparing for a planetary defense system in case of such a threat. While NASA has canceled plans to study Apophis due to budget cuts, other initiatives, like the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) and an asteroid-hunting telescope called NEO Surveyor, are underway to prepare for potential asteroid threats.

Despite this increased risk, Earth remains safe from asteroid impacts, thanks to the agency’s efforts.
