Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship streaming service, Max, has failed to deliver on its promise of a diverse content lineup after two years of operation. The service, which combines HBO’s premium original content with Discovery’s broad array of unscripted programming, was touted as the ultimate destination for binge-watching.
However, subscribers to Max have expressed dissatisfaction with the limited options available, watching mostly studio movies and older Warner Bros. series. In contrast, viewers on other streaming platforms are able to choose from a wide range of à la carte content.
The mismatch between expected variety and actual offerings raises questions about the strategic direction of Max. Industry leaders had initially envisioned the service as a combination of HBO’s lean-in original content with Discovery’s relaxed unscripted programming, promising something for every viewer at any time of day. Despite this vision, the service has not yet fulfilled its potential, leaving subscribers to seek out other options.
