Disney has finally closed its deal with Comcast to buy out NBCUniversal’s one-third stake in Hulu for approximately $9 billion, following over two years of haggling. The initial payment made by Disney to Comcast was $8.61 billion in December 2023, which represented only one-third of the guaranteed floor value of $27.5 billion set in 2019.
The companies had entered into arbitration to determine the final price tag, and on June 9, 2025, an additional $438.7 million is payable by Disney to NBCU to purchase NBCU’s interest in Hulu. The acquisition will close on or before July 24, 2025.
If the price had been determined by a bank hired by Comcast, it would have resulted in an additional $5 billion payable by Disney. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed satisfaction with the deal, stating that completing the acquisition will enable a deeper integration of Hulu’s content with Disney+ and ESPN’s direct-to-consumer product.
The deal marks a significant milestone for Disney as it seeks to own 100% of Hulu. The company had secured two-thirds ownership in 2019 after acquiring 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets for $71 billion.
