Ozempic Shows Promise as Anti-Addiction Drug in Early Study

A study at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is investigating whether Rybelsus, a pill form of Ozempic, can reduce alcohol use. Dr. Joseph Schacht leads the research, which has shown promising results in reducing the desire to drink. Participants report feeling less interested in having another drink after consuming one or two, and wanting alcohol less overall.

The study’s findings are not limited to alcohol; there is growing evidence that Rybelsus may also help with other addictions, including marijuana use, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug use. Dr. Schacht hopes the research will lead to widespread adoption of Ozempic as a treatment for various addictions.

Originally developed to treat diabetes, weight loss was an unintended consequence of Ozempic’s creation. The CU study is now seeking more participants to further explore the potential of Rybelsus in addiction treatment.
