US President Donald Trump has faced widespread criticism from late-night hosts for sending troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests, with many accusing him of exacerbating the situation.
Jimmy Kimmel, who addressed the issue on his show, said Trump is “dead-set” on causing conflict and intentionally inflaming tensions. Kimmel showed footage of peaceful protests outside his studio in Los Angeles, highlighting the contrast between the Fox News narrative of a violent insurrection and the reality on the ground.
Stephen Colbert also weighed in, calling the planned military parade in Washington D.C. “dictator stuff,” with an unprecedented display of military hardware. He joked that Trump’s birthday celebrations might be more exciting than the actual parade.
On The Daily Show, Desi Lydic noted that despite the protests, many demonstrators have taken a relaxed, SoCal vibe approach, and she questioned whether the situation could be resolved peacefully if nobody escalated it with unnecessary force.
Seth Meyers poked fun at Trump’s criticism of Elon Musk, joking that the president has “no respect for the office I’m putting on Airbnb!” He also made light of Trump’s upcoming appearance at a performance of Les MisĂ©rables and teased the launch of Chipotle’s new adobo ranch dip.
