A California woman is suing Costco for over $14 million after a heavy liquor cabinet display allegedly fell on her, causing severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. Sadie Novotny claims the company refused to share footage of the incident, despite having it in their possession.
According to court documents, the accident occurred at the Santa Rosa store in March. Novotny alleges that the cabinet was displayed on a defective wooden pallet and was set up in an unreasonably dangerous manner. The lawsuit argues that Costco failed to properly inspect and maintain the display, putting customers at risk.
Novotny’s lawyer, Claude Armand Wyle, claims that a Costco representative told him they have a video of the incident but refused to send it for review. The lawyer believes this is an attempt to cover up the company’s liability.
The lawsuit seeks $9 million for pain and suffering, $5 million for emotional distress, and additional damages for medical expenses and lost wages. A case management conference is scheduled for September 4 at the San Francisco Federal Courthouse.
