A child who recently traveled internationally has tested positive for measles, potentially exposing others in the Iowa City area. This is the third measles case reported in Iowa this year, with the second case also occurring in June.
The child visited several stores on June 4 and June 5, including:
– Costco at 2900 Heartland Drive, Coralville (11:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.)
– Walmart at 919 Highway 1 W., Iowa City (2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
– Marshalls at 1451 Coral Ridge Ave., Coralville (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Health officials are urging Iowans to check their vaccination records and take steps to protect themselves, their families, and their communities. Measles is the most contagious disease but can be prevented with the MMR vaccine.
Symptoms of measles include fever, dry cough, runny nose, red eyes, and Koplik spots, which appear two to three days after initial symptoms. The rash appears roughly three to five days later, lasting several days before resolving.
Measles spreads through breathing in droplets released when people cough or sneeze. It is one of the most contagious infections known to exist and can be spread for several days before and after a rash develops.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and take preventive measures to minimize exposure to measles.
