12 Fruits & Veggies Found Contaminated with Toxic Pesticides

A new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has identified the “Dirty Dozen” — 12 conventionally-grown produce items contaminated with high levels of pesticides, including some banned in Europe. The list includes spinach, strawberries, kale, and potatoes, which were found to contain toxic chemicals such as cypermethrin and chlorpropham.

The EWG’s annual report is based on USDA tests of over 53,000 samples of 47 fruits and vegetables. The top 12 contaminated produce items are:

1. Strawberries
2. Spinach
3. Kale, collard & mustard greens
4. Grapes
5. Peaches
6. Pears
7. Nectarines
8. Apples
9. Bell & hot peppers
10. Cherries
11. Blueberries
12. Green beans

However, the report also highlights 15 produce items that are considered “Clean Fifteen,” meaning they have low levels of pesticide residues and can be a safer choice for consumers. These include bananas, avocados, pineapples, and sweet corn.

The EWG emphasizes that their list is intended to inform shoppers about the potential risks associated with certain produce and encourage them to make informed choices. Experts recommend washing produce before consumption and using methods like apple cider vinegar or rinsing under warm water to minimize pesticide residues.

According to the report, chronic exposure to pesticides has been linked to various health risks, including developmental delays, hormone disruption, and certain cancers. The EWG encourages consumers to take steps to reduce their exposure to toxic chemicals in produce.
