Astros Send Right-Hander Forrest Whitley to Rays for Cash Considerations

The Houston Astros have traded right-hander Forrest Whitley to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations. Whitley, 27, has struggled with injuries and performance issues since entering the major leagues in 2023.

Whitley was once considered one of baseball’s top prospects, ranked #5 overall by Baseball America in 2019. However, he has hit several speed bumps due to shoulder problems and a Tommy John surgery in 2021. Despite showing promise in his role as a reliever last year, Whitley failed to stay healthy, starting the season on the injured list with a bone bruise in his left knee.

The Rays, who have a reputation for developing pitchers, have taken on Whitley’s risk and may be able to get him back on track. With an out-of-options contract, the Astros had to move on from Whitley, but some believe he still has potential if he can stay healthy.
