A measles outbreak has been identified in Boston after an unvaccinated individual infected with the virus visited several locations in the city last week. The individual, who spent time at various places including Westin Boston Seaport District Hotel, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Logan International Airport Terminal C, is now being traced and notified of potentially exposed residents and travelers.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that causes flu-like symptoms, followed by a red and blotchy rash. The virus can spread through coughing, breathing, or sneezing, as well as touching contaminated surfaces within two hours of an infected person’s presence.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 1,197 measles cases across the US, with Texas reporting over 700 cases and 12% of infected individuals requiring hospitalization. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health emphasizes the importance of obtaining the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine to protect against the virus.
According to Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, commissioner of public health for Boston, the MMR vaccine is 93-97% effective in preventing measles infection and protecting against severe disease. The commission urges those who do not know their measles immunization status to get vaccinated with at least one dose of the MMR vaccine.
