Universal’s live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” is on track to achieve a global box office debut of over $200M, surpassing initial projections. The film has grossed $54.9M from international markets, including $29.1M in previews, and is expected to reach $117.7M this session.
With its strong start, “HTTYD” is poised to become the 4th best worldwide opening of the year, behind only animated films like “Lilo & Stitch” and “Ne Zha 2”. The film’s global bow would also rank as the 7th biggest for a live-action remake, beating out other notable titles like “The Jungle Book” and “Aladdin”.
Internationally, the film is performing well across various markets. Mexico kicked off with $2.3M on Friday, followed by the UK & Ireland, China, Brazil, and Korea. France, Germany, Australia, Spain, Italy, and Thailand are also seeing strong performances.
The film’s success marks a notable milestone for Universal, with “HTTYD” expected to become the 4th biggest international box office opener among Hollywood movies this year.
