The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned passengers about a cybersecurity risk they can’t ignore. Simply plugging your phone into a public USB port to charge it while in the airport can leave you vulnerable to hackers using “juice port jacking.” This tactic, also known as malware installation at USB ports, allows hackers to steal sensitive information such as passwords, banking details, and credit card numbers.
The TSA advises against plugging your phone directly into a USB port and instead recommends bringing a TSA-compliant power brick or battery pack. This way, you can keep your device charged without exposing it to potential malware attacks.
Cybersecurity expert Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson echoed this warning, stating that criminals often tamper with public charging ports in airports to install malware on unsuspecting passengers’ phones while they charge up. If the malware is installed, hackers will search for personal information, putting your sensitive data at risk.
To stay safe, Knutsson advises against plugging the USB part of your phone charger into public ports and instead recommends plugging the charging block directly into an outlet. By taking these simple precautions, you can protect yourself from potential cyber threats while traveling.
