A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is expected to become the dominant strain in Ontario, according to experts. This variant, part of the Omicron subfamily, has emerged globally and has been detected in travelers arriving from various regions.
As of now, cases of NB.1.8.1 are low in Ontario, with 2.6% positivity rates reported since the start of the month. However, the data is limited due to infrequent testing. According to Dr. Fahad Razak, an internal medicine physician, the new variant makes up around 10% of all COVID-19 cases and is expected to rise quickly.
Symptoms of NB.1.8.1 are similar to previous strains, with respiratory issues being the most typical in infected individuals. Vulnerable populations, such as those over 65 years old and immunocompromised, remain at high risk.
To protect against the new variant, experts recommend getting vaccinated, especially for vulnerable groups. A COVID-19 booster shot is recommended every year to bolster immune protection. Good hygiene practices, including proper hand washing, wearing a mask in indoor spaces, and staying home until symptoms improve, can also help slow down the spread of the virus.
While it’s not yet known if NB.1.8.1 will cause increased illness, experts emphasize that precautions taken prior to this strain remain effective. As more data becomes available, Canadians can expect updates on the new variant and how to protect themselves.
