ASGSR Urges Action to Save NASA Biological Sciences Funding

The American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) is sounding the alarm over severe cuts to NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, specifically targeting the Biological and Physical Sciences Division (BPS). The President’s Budget Request includes a 72% reduction in funding from $87.5 million to just $25 million, leaving researchers facing significant uncertainty.

This drastic cut will severely impact research projects, training initiatives, and the ability to continue workforce development programs. It also jeopardizes NASA’s long-term exploration plans and the translational benefits of BPS research for Earth-based applications. The ASGSR community is familiar with the devastating effects of such cuts, which took over a decade to recover from in the past.

However, the President’s Budget Request only represents a request to Congress. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees will now craft their own versions of the Commerce-Justice-Science (CJS) bill, providing a crucial window for advocacy. ASGSR urges members to take immediate action to support BPS funding.

Key talking points include:

* The vital role BPS research plays in NASA’s exploration goals, including astronaut health and safety
* The critical importance of BPS research in improving life on Earth
* The significance of BPS research in maintaining leadership and competitiveness in space
* The importance of BPS research in driving a successful commercial LEO economy

Members can take the following steps:

* Fill out the advocacy form to track efforts
* Contact Senators and Congressmen/women with the provided template letter
* Request an in-person meeting at their local office
