Warner Bros. Discovery is splitting into two entities, with one focusing on streaming and content production, and the other on traditional television. This change comes as the company tries to manage its debt and keep up with the growing demand for streaming services.
Under the leadership of David Zaslav, Warner Bros. has faced criticism for cutting content, but now it’s reducing some of its linear channels. The five channels that will cease programming are HBO Family, ThrillerMax, MovieMax, and OuterMax. These channels cater to specific audiences, including science fiction fans, young adults, and children.
OuterMax was known for sci-fi, horror, and fantasy films, while MovieMax focused on movies targeting the 18-34 demographic. ThrillerMax did horror, mystery, and suspense content, with HBO Family offering kids’ programming like Sesame Street. These channels have seen declining viewership in recent years, as people increasingly prefer to pick a movie over flipping through TV channels.
Despite this change, some of Warner Bros.’ linear channels will continue to operate, including HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Comedy, and HBO Zone. The new company focusing on traditional television aims to adapt to the changing media landscape.
