Art Lover’s Careless Moment Ruins Italian Museum Chair

A couple’s careless moment has left an Italian museum reeling after they filmed themselves sitting on a crystal-covered chair, causing significant damage to the piece. The “Van Gogh” chair, built by Italian artist Nicola Bolla and adorned with Swarovski crystals, was deliberately sat on by the pair during a photo opportunity.

Footage released by Palazzo Maffei in Verona shows the man losing his balance and crushing the chair beneath him. The couple fled before staff became aware of the incident, prompting officials to notify police.

Museum director Vanessa Carlon expressed disappointment, stating that “sometimes we lose our brains” while taking photos and failing to consider the consequences. She hopes the CCTV footage will serve as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of respecting art in all its forms.

The chair’s value is considered priceless, but restorative work has since been completed, with two legs and the main seat repaired. The museum’s art historian, Carlotta Menegazzo, notes that while the piece appears sturdy, its frame is largely hollow and held together by foil.

Palazzo Maffei, which opened in 2020, features 650 pieces on display, including works by Picasso and ancient Egyptian art. The museum urges visitors to adopt a more respectful attitude towards art, highlighting its fragility and importance of preserving it for future generations.
