Rory McIlroy is looking forward to competing in the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Portrush, where he hopes to “climb another mountain” by winning the prestigious event. The Northern Irishman has struggled since his recent Masters victory and ended his US Open campaign on a positive note with a three-under 67.
McIlroy will play in the Travelers Championship next week before taking two weeks off to prepare for the Open, which he missed the cut in 2019. He acknowledges that competing at home can be emotionally challenging, recalling how his emotions got the better of him last year after failing to make the cut.
Despite a tough period, McIlroy believes his game is physically sound and has driven well in recent weeks. However, it’s his mental approach that needs improvement, with the world number two stating that he’s been struggling to get motivated lately.
Taking time off will help McIlroy regain his focus, allowing him to feel refreshed and rejuvenated ahead of the Open. With five major championships under his belt, the 36-year-old is eager to make a strong return and prove himself at home.
