NASA has released a new documentary series called “Cosmic Dawn” that provides an intimate look at the development of the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope. The 90-minute film offers never-before-seen footage from the telescope’s crew as they showcase the challenges and triumphs of designing and assembling this ambitious scientific endeavor.
According to Rebecca Sirmons, head of NASA+, “At NASA, we’re thrilled to share the untold story of our James Webb Space Telescope in our new film ‘Cosmic Dawn,’ celebrating not just the discoveries, but the extraordinary people who made it all happen, for the benefit of humanity.”
The documentary takes viewers on a journey from 1996, when the project was first conceived as the Next Generation Space Telescope, to the final launch preparations. It follows mission leaders as they overcome massive budget overruns, re-designs, and engineering setbacks.
With over 300 individual components that must work together seamlessly, the design and construction of the James Webb Space Telescope posed significant engineering challenges. The documentary highlights personal stories from engineers and scientists working on the project, including near-disasters such as hurricanes and extreme weather conditions.
Despite the difficulties, NASA says there was “nothing easy about Webb at all.” The film also features stunning images of the universe captured by both the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomers explain how the telescope can peer deeper into time than any before it, making it a must-watch documentary for students and space enthusiasts.
“Cosmic Dawn” is available to watch on NASA+, YouTube, and other streaming platforms as part of NASA’s 66-year commitment to sharing its work with the public.
