Humpback whales have long been known to create complex behaviors like blowing bubble nets and puffing strings of bubbles, but scientists have recently discovered a new playful behavior. Researchers have collected footage of 12 humpbacks producing large bubble rings at the ocean’s surface, directed towards humans.
The observations were made by experts, naturalists, and citizen scientists in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The researchers interviewed the observers to gather more information about their experiences with the bubble rings. Most episodes involved playful interactions with humans, such as boats, swimming, or light aircraft, while only two were associated with foraging.
The study was conducted under Whale SETI, an organization aiming to understand non-human intelligence by deciphering humpback whale communication. The findings suggest that humpbacks may be using playful behaviors like bubble-blowing to interact and communicate with humans.
This discovery highlights the complexity of humpback whale behavior and challenges the traditional view of these animals as simply “cool” for blowing bubbles. Instead, their playful antics reveal a deeper understanding of non-human intelligence and social behavior.
