A gunman who posed as a police officer killed two Democratic state lawmakers and their husband in Minnesota, leaving behind a list of potential targets that included abortion providers and several dozen other politicians. The suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was still at large on Sunday, with authorities operating under the assumption that he is alive.
Boelter fled the scene on foot after confronting the couple, Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, in Brooklyn Park, where they were both shot and killed. Another Democratic lawmaker, state Senator John Hoffman, and his wife Yvette, were also targeted, with Hoffman being wounded by nine bullets.
The suspect’s vehicle contained a list of potential targets, including abortion providers and several dozen Minnesota Democrats, including Governor Tim Walz and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. Authorities say the killing was motivated by a desire to attack abortion providers due to its connection to the list of targets.
Police are searching for Boelter in a rural area southwest of Minneapolis, but have not yet found him. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities instructing residents to keep their doors locked after finding one of the suspect’s vehicles.
The attack comes as part of a series of high-profile episodes of U.S. political violence, including the 2022 attack on former Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband and an attempted assassination of Donald Trump during last year’s presidential campaign.
