Santa Monica is preparing for today’s “No Kings” protest, which promises to bring a heightened police presence, direct communication with residents, and additional safety measures. To ensure public safety, the city has set up barricades on Main Street between Pico Blvd. and Colorado Ave., as well as on Olympic Dr. between 4th St. and Ocean Ave.
City officials have stated their commitment to protecting First Amendment rights to peaceful assembly while warning against criminal behavior that may lead to arrests and prosecution. Police Chief Ramón Batista has issued a community update, emphasizing the need for peaceful demonstrations and outlining prohibited items, including frozen water bottles, glass or metal bottles, and umbrellas.
To prepare residents, the city is offering emergency alerts through texting SMVISIT to 888-777 or registering at santamonica.gov/alerts. Residents are advised to report crimes in progress by calling 911 or texting 911 if unable to call safely. Local politicians, including City Council members, State Senator Ben Allen, and Assemblyman Rick Zbur, will speak during the event.
The protest is set to take place in Palisades Park from 11-12:30 a.m., with participants remaining in the park for the duration of the protest. Downtown businesses have taken precautions by boarding up their properties, fearing potential disruptions similar to those seen during last year’s Black Lives Matter protests.
