R. Kelly claims that prison officials gave him a near-lethal dose of medication while he was in solitary confinement, according to his latest emergency motion seeking release. The singer and his lawyer, Beau Brindley, are hoping for a temporary furlough due to threats to his life while incarcerated.
Kelly alleges that the overdose occurred after he showed his medications to prison officials when he was placed in solitary confinement last week. His lawyer claims this move was meant to punish him for filing an emergency motion seeking release from prison due to fears for his safety.
The singer’s lawyer, Beau Brindley, stated that Kelly experienced symptoms such as faintness, dizziness, and seeing black spots in his vision after the alleged overdose. Kelly then struggled to get up on his feet and eventually lost consciousness while crawling to the door of his cell.
Kelly has been in solitary confinement since June 10, when Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking a temporary furlough. The filing included a declaration from an inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, who alleged that prison officials asked him to kill Kelly before transferring him from Arizona to North Carolina.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien stated that placing Kelly in solitary confinement was meant to protect him. However, Kelly’s lawyer claims that the singer is not safe in federal custody and that his fears of a future incident are only heightened by the belief that officials might not adequately protect him.
Kelly is serving a 30-year sentence after being convicted of multiple charges related to racketeering, including the sexual exploitation of children and forced labor.
