A person with infectious measles traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on June 10, potentially exposing hundreds of travelers to the highly contagious disease. The public was at risk between 5 p.m. and midnight that day, particularly in Terminal 4, Concourses C and D.
Measles can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves and spreads through direct contact or when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The disease can cause serious illness, especially in vulnerable populations like young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
If symptoms appear, individuals should self-isolate, stay away from others, and seek medical care. To minimize exposure to others, symptomatic travelers should first contact their healthcare provider or a local hospital emergency room before visiting. This measure helps prevent further transmission of the disease.
This marks the first measles outbreak in Arizona in 2025, with four cases reported in Navajo County last week.
