Samsung’s flagship S-series phones have been lacking significant camera hardware innovation for several generations. A recent tip from respected tipster Ice Universe suggests that this trend may continue, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra and potentially even the S27 Ultra following the same camera setup as their predecessors.
The reason behind Samsung’s conservative approach is unclear, but it may be due to a focus on producing thinner and lighter camera phones, similar to the S25 Edge. However, this would limit the space available for larger image sensors and periscope telephoto modules, which require more chassis thickness.
Another possibility is that Samsung is seeking to cut costs in its mobile division to offset losses made by its semiconductor chip division. If true, this could mean relying on software improvements and AI to boost image quality rather than investing in new hardware.
Samsung’s rivals are likely to follow suit with their own AI-powered camera upgrades, making it unlikely that the company can afford to play it safe in a highly competitive market. As Samsung continues to lag behind in camera innovation, consumers may have to wait until 2028 for a flagship phone with significantly improved camera capabilities.
