Beware of Protein Powders, Say Experts

Gym-goers are being warned by a bowel cancer surgeon that protein powders can be bad for your gut. Dr James Kinross, a consultant colorectal surgeon at Imperial College London, says people need to be careful about what they feed their gut. He attributes the increasing burden of colorectal cancer worldwide to the modern-day approach to the gym and the over-consumption of protein.

Dr Kinross warns that high protein powders can drive inflammation and cause bowel cancer due to the toxins released during metabolism. Instead, he suggests aiming for plant-based proteins and avoiding powdered fibres and nutrition counters. Red meat should be consumed only once a week in moderation, as it can increase the risk of bowel cancer.

The doctor emphasizes that being a full vegan is not necessary, but replacing red meat with white fish or chicken can significantly reduce the risk of bowel cancer. He also highlights that ultra-processed foods, environmental contaminants, and specific microbes in the gut are major contributors to colon cancer.

Dr Kinross stresses the importance of early screening and encourages people to go see their doctor if they’re worried about bowel cancer symptoms such as bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss. Simple fecal poo tests can also provide valuable insight into risk factors.

Bowel cancer rates are expected to increase to 3.2 million new cases per year worldwide by 2040, according to the WHO. Dr Kinross believes that prevention is key and emphasizes the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.
