Nintendo revealed major details about the next first-party game on the Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza, during a recent livestream. The game includes light RPG mechanics and extensive destruction gameplay. The biggest surprise is the introduction of Pauline as Donkey Kong’s sidekick in the classic arcade game.
Pauline was initially shown as an anthropomorphic rock in the first trailer, but was revealed to be trapped inside it. Nintendo pulled off a prank by replacing the original box art with the new character design. A two-player co-op mode will allow one player to control Pauline, and the game will also feature outfits for both Donkey Kong and Pauline.
The game’s lore has been shaken up, questioning what was previously thought about Donkey Kong’s motivations in the arcade game. The inclusion of Pauline as a kid raises questions about her past with Donkey Kong. Nintendo also revealed light RPG mechanics, including a skill tree and character transformations that grant new abilities.
Gameplay will emphasize destructive elements, similar to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players will be able to destroy objects in creative ways, leading to novel exploration methods. The game will utilize the Joy-Con’s mouse functionality, including a bonus mode where players can sculpt rocks with mouse controls. Donkey Kong Bananza is set for release on July 17 as a Switch 2 exclusive, and an Amiibo figure featuring both characters has been announced.
